COASTAL DANCE THEATRE

 History (1996-present)

Coastal Dance Theatre Society (CDTS) is a Dartmouth based, not-for-profit, youth performing company.  Our mandate is to present to the community classically based works of high technical and artistic standards.  CDTS provides an opportunity for aspiring young dancers to perform in a professional setting in both classical and contemporary works. CDTS offers young choreographers and local professional Artists the opportunity to present their works to the public in a full theatre setting.

 The discipline and dedication of both performers and choreographers is evident in the quality of dance CDTS has presented over the years. The first major production supported by the Canada Council Grants to emerging Choreographers was “STRUCTURE IN DANCE…AN ARCHITECTURAL EXPLORATION”.  “CELTIC MASS FOR THE SEA” included the Soundtrax Choir, under the direction of Gary Ewer and live Celtic musicians and was widely acclaimed as a beautiful and moving tribute to local composer Scott Macmillan’s glorious music.

The full length story ballets produced every Holiday season for the  “CONCERTS FOR CHILDREN” series has been an unqualified success, with colorful and popular productions such as CINDERELLA, THE SNOW QUEEN, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, ALICE IN WINTERLAND and the NUTCRACKER. 

 The goal of the Company has been to train young dancers and offer local choreographers suitable venues for their development. Incorporating the experience of professionals (both dancers and choreographers) whenever possible.  But also important to the Company has been the desire to promote classical and contemporary dance as an accessible and enjoyable art form.  To that end, CDTS has made a special effort to reach out to schoolchildren, both at the primary and high school levels.  Special school packages have been prepared and offered to participating schools to enhance the theatre experience.  Thousands of Nova Scotian school children have had their first taste of live dance in the beautiful Alderney Landing Theatre, through the “Concerts for Children” Series.

 The Companies  “IN CONCERT” Spring Showcase offers a challenging amalgamation  of Contemporary and Classical pieces designed to expand the repertoire of the students and allow local and visiting  choreographers a venue for expression.  Each year, the dancers perform an adaptation of one of the great classics, such as Swan Lake, Giselle and La Bayadere… a challenge indeed and a delight for dancer and audience alike.
